Rivers State Government Has Boosted University Of Port Harcourt’s Sports Tradition, Vice-Chancellor Owunari Georgewill Reveals

University of Port Harcourt’s vice-chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill has revealed various ways in which the institution has gained from the government of Rivers State in the area of sports.

Sports247 reports that Professor Georgewill made this disclosure in the wake of an agreement that will see Rivers State athletes camp at UNIPORT in preparation for this year’s National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Georgewill pointed out that this is not the first time the university would partner with the state government and acknowledged that they still have legacies to show for some past collaborations.

The VC declared, “It is on the basis of this that we are also accepting being considered by Rivers State government to serve in the capacity of the camping, training and so on. This university will always partner with Rivers State government.”

Georgewill went on to mention one specific boost that was recently gained by UNIPORT from its partnership with the state’s administration and expressed hope that their latest pact will yield many dividends at Gateway Games 2025.

“Today, we have a stadium that is in order, courtesy of the Rivers State government, because they hosted the Public Service Games here. Nothing can be better than that.

If you want to know the advantage, just go to the stadium. You will know that it is no longer the same as it used to be. So, this one has come; and we are indeed very happy that this university, known for sports, will get some little facility upgrade again.

“That’s because you are not going to train them on facilities that are not up to time. You will do some work and we will benefit from it. We will all be happy by the time you finish training them and take them to Ogun State,” Georgewill enthused.
