Nigerian Tennis Stars Shine: Three Advance To ITF/CAT Junior Championship Finals In Togo

Three Nigerian tennis players are set to compete in the finals of the ITF/CAT West & Central Africa Junior Championship (AJC) Today, January 14, 2025, in Togo.

Out of the nine Nigerian players who reached the quarterfinals across the U-14 and U-16 boys’ and girls’ categories, only three advanced to the final stages after Monday’s matches.

Chukwudubem Amasiani became the first Nigerian to secure a spot in the final with an impressive victory over Mali’s Karamoko Kante. He will now face the tournament’s second seed, Albechir Diarra, also from Mali. Amasiani’s potential win would further establish him as one of Africa’s top young players and guarantee him a place in the Main AJC event later this year.

In the girls’ U-16 category, top-seeded Khadijat Mohammed continued her dominant performance, effortlessly defeating Togo’s Winner Gakpo 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals. The two-time Dala Hard Court champion remains undefeated in the competition.

In the boys’ U-16 category, the semifinal clash between Onyekachi Ogumjiofor and Gbolahan Olawale, both Nigerians, was left unfinished and will resume on Tuesday morning before the final later in the day.

As the tournament progresses, Nigerians are optimistic about securing victories in all three finals, paving the way for the players’ qualification for the Main AJC event later this year.
