NWFL Approves Honey Badgers’ Name Change to Benue Queens Following State Government Takeover

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially approved the renaming of the Honey Badgers of Makurdi to Benue Queens.

The change follows the successful takeover of the club by the Benue State Government, which met all the league’s rigorous requirements.

In a press release made available to Sports247 by the NWFL, the league announced that the approval was conveyed in a letter signed by NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi.

The letter affirmed that the Benue State Government has demonstrated its capacity to manage and fund the club in accordance with NWFL regulations.

“After submitting to the very rigorous process put in place to ensure that only serious, business-minded individuals and corporate groups are admitted to club ownership, the NWFL is satisfied that the Benue State Government has substantially met all requirements and has been granted approval to take over Honey Badgers,” Shabi said in the statement.

She praised the Benue State Government’s commitment to upholding the league’s integrity and safeguarding the welfare of players and stakeholders.

As a result, Benue Queens will assume all fixtures, points, and standings previously held by Honey Badgers in the NWFL Premiership, effective immediately.

The club, based in Makurdi, has been riding high on their recent promotion to the NWFL Premiership, marking a historic achievement in their journey from lower divisions to the elite level of Nigerian women’s football.

Now competing in Group B, Benue Queens will face seasoned teams, including Naija Ratels, Ibom Angels, Adamawa Queens, Delta Queens, Bayelsa Queens, and Rivers Angels. Their first test in the top-flight league will be a highly anticipated clash against Robo Queens on January 15, 2025, in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

This transition not only reflects a new chapter for the team but also reinforces the growing commitment to the development of women’s football in Nigeria
