As part of its renewed commitment to revolutionize eSports in Nigeria, the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, convened a high-profile virtual meeting with key stakeholders in the eSports ecosystem.
This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of positioning Nigeria as a major player in the booming multi-billion-dollar eSports industry.
Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Olopade underscored the significance of creating a robust framework for eSports, stating:
“This meeting is the next step of the Commission’s determination to place eSports where it rightly belongs and gives it the right regulation and framework for sustainable operation.”
He highlighted the presidential mandate to build a strong sports economy, identifying eSports as a critical driver of this ambition.
“I am sure you are all stakeholders in the eSports family, and you must have noticed the new mandate given to us by Mr. President to build a strong sports economy. The Commission sees eSports as a major driver to achieve this,” Olopade emphasized.
The Director General also reiterated the NSC’s commitment to fostering unity within the sector. “This is why the NSC, under the Chairmanship of Mallam Shehu Dikko, is keen to see that all stakeholders in the eSports family are brought under one united Federation,” he said.
Hon. Olopade further revealed the Commission’s ambitious plans to integrate eSports into the National Sports Festival and to secure Nigeria’s participation in global international eSports tournaments.
“The National Sports Commission has lofty plans for the growth of eSports, and it is the reason why all factions must come together for the sport to reach its full potential,” he concluded.
The virtual meeting brought together prominent figures from Nigeria’s eSports scene, including Yaya Maikori, Sidney Esiri (Dr. Sid), Ikechukwu Okoye, Sayo Owolabi, Ifeanyi Elumeziem, and Damilola Pedro of Gamr Africa.
