The Nigerian U17 girls, popularly known as the Flamingos, showcased a scintillating performance in their second match of the WAFU U17 Girls’ Cup on Thursday, demolishing Niger Republic 9-0 in Ghana.
Aishat Animashaun set the tone with an early fifth-minute goal, deftly finishing Mary Mamudu’s precise in-swinger.
The highlight of the match came in the 17th minute, as Shakirat Moshood unleashed a breathtaking 35-yard screamer that sailed past Nigerien goalkeeper Ndiaye Fatai Basiru. Moshood was relentless, adding another goal six minutes later, assisted by Animashaun, bringing the tally to three.
The first half saw a flurry of goals, with Janet Akekoromowei netting twice in quick succession before completing her hat-trick with a powerful header in the 43rd minute.
Moshood wasn’t to be outdone, scoring her third just before the halftime whistle, making it 7-0.
The second half saw the Flamingos maintaining their intensity. Moshood struck her fourth goal with a solo drive just before the hour mark. Peace Effiong sealed the victory in the 79th minute with a thunderous shot from outside the box, rounding off a remarkable display.
The Flamingos, a blend of precision, power, and flair, left no doubt about their dominance. Head coach Bankole Olowookere praised the team’s cohesion, stating, “This is a statement of intent. We are here to win, and every match is an opportunity to prove our worth.”
The Flamingos now look ahead to their clash against Cote d’Ivoire on Monday, aiming to continue their winning streak and cement their place at the top of the competition.
