Catholic Diocese of Gboko to Host Maiden Marathon, Fifth Bishop’s Cup – Father Christopher Agev

Father Christopher Agev, the Director of Sports for the Catholic Diocese of Gboko in Benue State, recently spoke to Sports247 about two significant upcoming events: the inaugural marathon and the fifth edition of the Bishop’s Cup.

In an exclusive interview, Father Agev explained, “The marathon race, organized by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Gboko, is set to usher in the Bishop’s Cup, a football competition for all deaneries in the diocese. The marathon is scheduled for the 31st of November 2024 in Gboko Town, while the Bishop’s Cup will begin on the 6th of December 2024 and run for two weeks.”

When asked about the motive behind these events, Father Agev emphasized the bishop’s dedication to youth development. “The bishop is interested in youth. He uses sports for unity and peace, and to keep young people off the streets and away from social vices, especially as we approach December, a period when these vices are more prevalent. The competition keeps them engaged and productive.”

Regarding the format of the Bishop’s Cup, Father Agev shared, “Twelve teams from the diocese will participate. They have been grouped into four groups of three teams each. The competition will follow a league format, with the best teams advancing to the quarterfinals, semifinals, and ultimately, the finals.”

This year marks the first edition of the marathon. Father Agev highlighted the attractive prizes: “The bishop is offering a tricycle for the first prize in the male category and a motorcycle for the female category.”

Father Agev also had a message for the youth: “I encourage everyone with the energy and ability to participate. Winning isn’t everything; participating has health benefits and keeps you fit.”

When asked about improvements in sports development in Nigeria, Father Agev stressed the importance of timely financial support. “The new National Sports Commission should be empowered with funds.

Timely release of these funds is crucial for athletes’ preparation, enabling them to perform better and win medals in competitions.”

The Catholic Diocese of Gboko is gearing up for an exciting end to the year, with events aimed at promoting sports, unity, and positive engagement among the youth.
