Nigeria’s Flamingos began their U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over New Zealand, led by an exceptional performance from captain Taiwo Afolabi.
The Nigerian No. 10 was named Player of the Match after dominating the midfield and capping off her display with a well-taken goal.

The Flamingos were quick off the mark, with Shakirat Moshood opening the scoring in just the second minute. Khadijat Adegoke added a second in the 13th minute, followed by a goal from Farihat Abdulwahab in the 28th, giving Nigeria a comfortable lead at halftime. Afolabi extended the advantage in the 55th minute, rising above the New Zealand defense to head home, making it 4-0. New Zealand managed a response with a goal from Hannah Saxon in the 60th minute, but it wasn’t enough to shift the momentum.
After the match, Afolabi kept the team grounded despite the big win. “What a way to start the competition, but as a team, we will stay focused. Our coach has told us this is not a sprint but a marathon. One game at a time with discipline, and we’re here to make history,” Afolabi said.
Afolabi’s performance was a masterclass in midfield control, setting the tone for Nigeria’s success.
