CAF Investigates As Super Eagles Stranded In Libya For Over 15 Hours

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is investigating the troubling ordeal faced by Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, after they were stranded for over 15 hours at Al Abraq Airport in Libya.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) reported that the team’s flight was unexpectedly diverted from Benghazi to the remote airport, where they were left without food, accommodation, or transportation.

Libyan security forces cordoned off the team, preventing them from leaving the airport, which led to concerns about their safety.

The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘’Super Eagles’’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities.

The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.

The team had traveled to Libya for an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifying match. However, due to the harsh conditions and lack of support from the Libyan authorities, the Super Eagles refused to play, prioritizing their well-being.

The Nigerian government and NFF escalated the issue, urging CAF to take swift action against those responsible for violating CAF statutes.

CAF’s Disciplinary Board is now involved, and Nigeria has called for the immediate evacuation of the team. “This is a serious breach of trust,” Nigeria’s Sports Minister said, emphasizing that the safety of the team is paramount.
