The 20-year-old, who has been a key figure in British junior fencing over the last six years, made the decision as fencing begins to gain momentum in Nigeria.

In a letter dated August 1, 2024, British Fencing CEO Georgina Usher confirmed the acceptance of Akinyosoye’s transfer request, waiving the typical three-year non-compete period required by the International Fencing Federation (FIE). The letter stated, “British Fencing has no objection to the athlete (Folayemi Akinyosoye) changing their FIE nationality and we waive any non-compete period.”

Akinyosoye expressed his excitement about representing Nigeria, citing his personal connection to the country and his desire to contribute to the sport’s growth. “I would like to represent Nigeria because it’s where my family roots are, and I want to help develop fencing, which is in its early stages in the country. I also hope to inspire young Nigerians to take an interest in Sabre Fencing,” he said.

Looking ahead, Akinyosoye is optimistic about Nigeria’s chances of competing in the 2028 Olympic Games, aiming to work closely with the Nigeria Fencing Federation to elevate his skills and the sport’s profile in Nigeria.

Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, welcomed the switch and emphasized its importance to the sport’s development in the country. “We are excited to have Akinyosoye join our team. His decision shows that our efforts to grow fencing in Nigeria are bearing fruit, and we look forward to him representing Nigeria at international tournaments and potentially the 2028 Olympics,” Samuel stated.
