Divine Imode, a 300-level Human Physiology student at the University of Port Harcourt, shared her exhilarating experience at the inaugural All Nigeria Amazon Scrabble Championship (AASC) held in Benin, where she impressively secured third place.
“I’m thrilled to share my experience at the first all-female Amazon Scrabble game in Nigeria, held in Benin,” Divine began.
Despite a challenging journey, she managed to win two out of three games on the first day, setting a positive tone for the competition. “I told myself it was a great start.”
On the second day, Divine’s performance peaked as she won six consecutive games, earning her the top spot in the standings with an 8-1 record.
“I was feeling unstoppable and proud,” she said. Her momentum carried into the King of the Hills (KOH) round, where she triumphed over Akpos Malafukumo (BG), boosting her to a 9-1 record.
“I was overwhelmed, having never imagined topping the table alongside such talented players.”
However, the KOH games proved intense, and Divine lost her next two matches to the tournament winner, finishing third with a 9-3 record and a -285 spread.
“Those games were emotional, and I made errors that cost me,” she reflected. Despite the emotional toll and errors made, Divine expressed immense pride in her achievements, especially given her busy academic schedule.
Divine extended her gratitude to the organizers, participants, her coach Eta Karo, Dennis Ikekeragor, the University of Port Harcourt, and her supportive family.
She described the event as unforgettable and a significant milestone in her Scrabble journey. “I enjoyed myself, and I’m sure everyone else did too. Well done to all participants, and better luck next time to my opponents!”
