Addis Ababa Set to Host 2024 ITTF Africa Championships With Cultural Showcase

Addis Ababa, the vibrant capital of Ethiopia and home to the African Union (AU) is set to welcome Africa’s finest table tennis talents for the 2024 ITTF Africa Championships from October 12 to 19.

This marks the first time in 24 years that Ethiopia will host the prestigious tournament, and expectations are high for both a successful competition and a memorable cultural experience.

Tesfaye Bizane, President of the Ethiopia Table Tennis Federation, expressed optimism about the event, noting that the championships provide a unique opportunity to spotlight Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage.

“This event is more than just a sporting competition. Visitors will experience the warmth of Ethiopian hospitality and enjoy the vibrant culture that makes our country unique,” Bizane said.

Participants and guests can look forward to exploring Addis Ababa’s famous attractions, including the National Museum, which houses the 3.2 million-year-old fossil “Lucy,” and tasting authentic Ethiopian coffee from its birthplace.

The city, as the headquarters of the AU, offers a blend of history, culture, and modernity.

In addition to the competition, a new leadership team for the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF) will be elected, adding further significance to the event.

The upgraded venue, which previously hosted the East African Championship, is set to provide a world-class stage for the tournament, supported by the ITTF and ATTF.

Bizane emphasized Ethiopia’s motivation for hosting, explaining that the tournament is expected to inspire a new generation of table tennis players in the country and boost the sport’s popularity.

He also expressed hope that the event would promote tourism and enhance Ethiopia’s international sporting profile.

With all preparations in place, Addis Ababa is ready to make the 2024 ITTF Africa Championships a remarkable and culturally rich event for all.
