Eguavoen Applauds 1XBet Community Cup, Highlights Grassroots Talent, Stays Silent On Super Eagles Coaching Debate

Super Eagles’ interim coach and technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Augustine Eguavoen, has commended the recent 1XBet Community Cup in Lagos, praising both the talent on display and the organizers for their efforts in grassroots football development.

Eguavoen, who was among the distinguished guests at the final held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos Island, expressed his admiration for the competition, stating that it showcased the abundance of hidden talent in Nigeria’s grassroots football.

Speaking to sports writers after the final, Eguavoen highlighted the importance of such tournaments in unearthing future football stars for the country. He urged other corporate bodies to follow 1XBet’s example in supporting community football initiatives.

“The future of Nigerian football is bright, as this competition has proven. There is no shortage of talent at the grassroots level, and we all need to get involved. You could see a blend of youthful energy and experienced players in this tournament,” he said.

However, when asked about the ongoing debate regarding the appointment of a new Super Eagles head coach, Eguavoen remained diplomatic. He emphasized that distinctions should not be drawn between foreign and local coaches, stating that a coach is a coach, regardless of nationality.

“A coach is a coach, whether foreign or local. It’s a profession, and the decision-makers will choose who they believe is best for the job. I prefer not to comment further because my words could be misconstrued,” Eguavoen remarked.

The former Super Eagles captain concluded by assuring Nigerians that the national team is fully prepared for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya, promising that the players will approach every match with utmost seriousness and determination.
