Ibom Angels have clinched an immediate return to the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership after a decisive 2-0 victory against Osun Babes in the Championship promotion playoffs at UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar, on Sunday, 7 September, 2024, Sports 247 reports.
According to NWFL official website the Uyo-based team, who had previously won all four of their group stage matches, continued their impressive form in this crucial fixture.
Osun Babes, meanwhile, saw their perfect record falter with a 1-1 draw against Gallant Queens leading up to this match.
Abasiofon Uwah and Victory Onuma scored in each half to secure the win and the promotion for Ibom Angels.
Uwah, the team captain, opened the scoring in the 10th minute, giving her side an early advantage. Despite Osun Babes’ efforts to level the score, Onuma extended Ibom Angels’ lead with a powerful long-range shot in the 61st minute.
Osun Babes pressed hard for a comeback in the second half, and their persistence earned them a penalty in the 75th minute after a foul by an Ibom Angels defender. However, Kafayat Bashiru’s penalty was missed in the 78th minute, dashing their hopes of a comeback.
Despite continued pressure, Osun Babes were unable to breach Ibom Angels’ defence and the match ended with Ibom Angels securing their place in the top flight.
This marks Ibom Angels’ successful return to the NWFL Premiership, replicating their feat of bouncing back to the top tier after relegation in 2021. Their previous return was achieved in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State in 2022.
