The Oyo State Football Association (Oyo FA), under the leadership of its Chairman, His Royal Majesty Oba James Odeniran, Alakinyele of Akinyele, continues to set new standards in grassroots football development.
This was exemplified in the recently concluded state play-off, where Iwalewa Football Academy of Saki triumphed over Sult De King of Ibadan to earn a spot in the Nationwide League 2.
The decisive match, held at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, saw Iwalewa FA secure a hard-fought 3-2 aggregate victory.
The first leg at Irewole Stadium, Saki, ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw, with Ajibowo Mutiu and Towobola Afeez scoring for Iwalewa FA, while Sult De King’s Ayo Giwa netted a brace.
Speaking after the match, Oyo FA Chairman Oba Odeniran commended both teams for their excellent performance and adherence to the principles of fair play.
As a former FIFA referee and match commissioner, the revered monarch emphasized the importance of maintaining the highest standards in officiating and competition management.
“The two teams gave fans great value for their money, and the match was a perfect example of competitive, clean football. On behalf of the Oyo FA, I congratulate Iwalewa Football Academy for their determination and hard work that has earned them promotion,” he said.
Oba Odeniran also reiterated the association’s commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all teams in the state.
“As someone who has officiated at the highest levels, I understand the significance of fair play. The Oyo FA will continue to provide unbiased officiating and transparent competition processes, which is why football is growing in leaps and bounds across Oyo State,” he remarked.
Fans and stakeholders echoed the Chairman’s sentiments, praising the Oyo FA’s professionalism and support for grassroots football.
Many pointed to the association’s transparency and efficient organization as key reasons for the rising number of private clubs and the steady improvement of football standards in the state.
“The leadership of the Oyo FA, under Oba Odeniran, has set the pace for other associations to follow,” said Coach Adedeji Adeoye. “Their fair approach and commitment to excellence have made Oyo State a model for football development.”
