As the Super Eagles prepare to face the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, Taiwo Awoniyi is brimming with confidence.
The 27-year-old Nottingham Forest striker believes that Nigeria holds a clear advantage heading into the crucial match, which will take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Nigeria, aiming for their 21st AFCON appearance, is determined to secure a win on home soil. Awoniyi, who returns to the national team after a ten-month injury layoff, emphasizes the importance of the upcoming match.
“We know what is at stake. For the fact that we lost against them, and the second factor is that we are playing at home now, this should be to our advantage,” he said in an interview with Flashscore.
The Super Eagles, under the guidance of Coach Gernot Rohr, are buoyed by their recent 2-1 comeback victory over a formidable opponent in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Awoniyi is confident in the squad’s depth and talent, underscoring the significance of teamwork.
“Like I have always said, football is about doing well for yourself, working hard as a team, and playing for each other. If we do that, I believe we will have the three points because we have the talents.”
After the match against Benin, Nigeria will travel to Kigali to face Rwanda, a team with an impressive recent record. Despite Rwanda’s form, Awoniyi remains unfazed. “For us, it is something big when it comes to playing for the Super Eagles. I think we have what it takes to win.”
Reflecting on the recent coaching drama that saw Bruno Labbadia exit abruptly, Awoniyi maintains a player’s focus. “Our job is to play football and we leave that side for the administrators to handle. We just want to go out there and do the best for the country, that’s it.”
Taiwo Awoniyi who missed the 2023 AFCON due to injury, is ready to contribute to Nigeria’s success, regardless of his role in the team. “What matters is putting the country first and ensuring we win, which I believe would bring a lot of joy to so many Nigerians,” he concluded.
