Super Eagles caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen has firmly denied any suggestions that he lobbied for his recent appointment as Nigeria’s interim head coach.
In a candid discussion with the team’s official media channels, Eguavoen clarified that his new role is a result of divine favor, not personal ambition.

“I am a member of the Federation, working as the Technical Director of the Nigerian Football Federation,” Eguavoen explained in a video shared on X by the Super Eagles’ official account.
“When a situation like this comes and you are called upon, you can’t say no. It’s a task that I had performed before; it is a duty that falls under my responsibility.”
He emphasized that his appointment was not something he sought out. “For the fact that the hierarchy of the Federation now feels and thinks that I can salvage the situation, why not? But one thing should be clear to the public: I didn’t ask for this; I didn’t lobby for this; I didn’t apply for this. It is God’s favor.”
Eguavoen is set to lead the Super Eagles in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda this month, as the team looks to secure a strong start on the road to AFCON 2025.
