Edo Rugby Teams Dominate South-South Zonal Elimination, Secure Qualification For 2024 National Youth Games

The South-South Zonal Elimination, a precursor to the 2024 National Youth Games, kicked off on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, in Benin City, Edo State.

The event began with a seamless screening of athletes from the participating states, including Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers.

Edo Rugby teams emerged victorious in their respective categories, securing their spots at the upcoming National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State. In the Rugby-Boys category, team Edo clinched a hard-fought victory over Bayelsa, winning 25-20 across two grueling encounters. With only two states competing in this event, the win was pivotal for Edo’s qualification.

In the Rugby-Girls category, Edo’s team advanced unchallenged as their Bayelsa counterparts failed to show up, further boosting Edo’s prospects at the national level.

The zonal elimination event has seen intense competition across various sports, with athletes battling to secure qualifications in nine different games. In the handball event, Edo’s female team delivered a commanding performance, defeating Cross River 34-8 to book their place at the National Youth Games.

“We’re thrilled with our teams’ performance so far, especially in rugby. This victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our athletes,” said an official from the Edo State Sports Commission, reflecting the pride and confidence of the state in its athletes.

The event continues with high stakes as Edo’s football team is set to face Akwa Ibom in a crucial match tomorrow afternoon, following an earlier match between Cross River and Bayelsa. The winners of these games will compete at 4 PM at Western Boys College, Benin.

Basketball fixtures also promise exciting matchups, with Akwa Ibom taking on Cross River and Edo squaring off against Bayelsa. Volleyball, basketball, and traditional sports, including Abula, are being held at Wire Road and Etete Indoor Sports Hall.

The South-South Zonal Elimination will culminate on September 1, 2024, in Benin, with the best teams advancing to the 8th Edition of the National Youth Games in Asaba.
