Samu Omorodion Joins FC Porto After Chelsea Deal Falls Through

As a member of the Spanish team, 20-year-old Sami Omorodion celebrated a gold medal victory in the men’s football event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Following a standout season on loan at Alaves from Atlético de Madrid, Omorodion was poised to join Chelsea, with a deal agreed and medical completed, but ultimately, the transfer collapsed.

With the signings of Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez, Atlético de Madrid needed to trim their roster and sell Omorodion to maintain financial stability.

The striker’s move to FC Porto was made official, with the club announcing a long-term deal that will tie him to the Estadio De Dragao until 2029.

As part of the deal, FC Porto, the 2004 UEFA Champions League champions, will pay Atlético €15m for a 50% stake in Omorodion’s economic rights, with options to acquire an additional 15% in 2025 and 2026 for €5m each, and a €100m release clause.

FC Porto secures Samu Omorodion’s signature after Villas-Boas intervenes following collapsed Chelsea deal. The transfer details include:

– €15m for 50% of Omorodion’s rights, with Atlético retaining 50%
– Porto holds options to acquire additional 15% stakes in 2025 and 2026 for €5m each
– Contract duration: until 2029
– Release clause: €100m

Omorodion is set to replace Francisco Evanilson, who left for Bournemouth after the Cherries’ top-scorer, Dominik Solanke, made a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Samu Omorodion expressed his pride in joining FC Porto, a club with a rich history, and acknowledged the legacy of legendary forwards like Gomes, Jardel, Falcao, and Jackson Martínez, stating, ‘I’m ready for the challenge’.

With Zaidu Sanusi already representing FC Porto since 2020, Samu Omorodion becomes the second player with Nigerian roots to join the Portuguese champions, although his international future is still unclear.
