Eguavoen who is currently the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has been put on the standby to monitor the players and recommend them for invitations ahead of the September international break, which accommodate the two the first two matches of the 2025 AFCON Qualifying Series, revealed our source.

The Super Eagles have been without a coach since Finidi George left the scene after two poor results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.

We reliably gathered that Austin Eguavoen has agreed to take charge of the two matches to avoid a vacuum in case the NFF fails to find a suitable foreign coach in time before the international window in September.

” The NFF are still considering the best option for the team, having received some offers but in the meantime the Technical Director has been monitoring the players and he has agreed to take charge of the AFCON qualifiers in case a coach is not named to avoid vacuum, ” said an insider source told our reporter.

Nigeria will play against their Beninonise counterpart on the 7th of September and faces the Amavubis of Rwanda three days later to begin the journey to Morocco 2025.

Austin Eguavoen will be making his third time out if he makes it to the doughnut in the two matches for the Super Eagles.

He led the team to third place finish at the 2006 AFCON in Egypt as well a Round of 16 exits in 2021 AFCON in Cameroon when he took charge of the team after Gernot Rohr was sacked.
