Despite his contributions, limited playing time at the Gtech Community Stadium has prompted considerations of a move elsewhere.
BBC sources reveal that Brentford’s head coach, Thomas Frank, is open to the prospect of the former FC Midtjylland player seeking opportunities that guarantee more minutes on the pitch.
This stance has attracted interest from several clubs, notably Girona FC, who have recently clinched a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the first time under the City Football Group’s stewardship.
Spanish publication Gironi reports that Girona has formally approached Brentford regarding Onyeka’s availability.
A transition to Girona would not only offer Onyeka the allure of Champions League football but also the experience of competing in a new league and adapting to a different tactical setup.
Nonetheless, with Onyeka’s contract with Brentford valid until 2027, inclusive of an option for an additional year, the terms required to facilitate his departure remain uncertain.
The situation is further complicated by Girona’s internal challenges. Manager Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz, popularly known as Míchel, has witnessed the exits of key players like Yan Couto, Artem Dovbyk, and Aleix García. Integrating a player of Onyeka’s caliber could be pivotal in reconstructing the squad that achieved a commendable third-place finish in La Liga last season.
As the transfer window’s closure looms, Onyeka is eager to finalize his future. The forthcoming weeks will be decisive in determining whether he continues his journey in the Premier League or embarks on a new chapter in Spain.
