Former Sweden-based attacker, Oke Akpoveta has failed in his bid to get a contract at Daniel Akpeyi’s former club, Chippa United of South Africa.
Sports247.ng gathered that, although Akpoveta put up spirited efforts during trials with the Port Elizabeth-based side, he was politely turned down at the weekend.
The official explanation, though, is that Chippa cannot sign him for now, because they are currently concentrating on escaping relegation, but the team, who also once had James Okwuosa on their cards, hinted that he could report for another spell after the current season in June.
However, feelers indicate that Akoveta was surplus to requirements, as Chippa currently have two recognisable strikers in their squad in Lerato and Rhulani Manzini, though the latter is still nursing an injury.
Nonetheless, it is a big to Akpoveta, as the former Helsingborgs of Sweden striker had been training with The Chilli Boys for two weeks, with hope of impressing the coach, Clinton Larsen and his assistants.
He will now have to solace in the declaration by Chippa on the possibility of inviting him back for another chance to train with the team when they reopen for pre-season training.
“He is not a bad player, it’s just that he also arrived at a time when the team is concentrating on surviving relegation and the attention is on the league. He might be invited again in June,” a Chippa United official said.
