Super Eagles’ goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has opened up about his remarkable journey to becoming the first-choice goalkeeper at Udinese, one of Italy’s top clubs in Serie A.
In an exclusive interview with Oma Sports TV, Okoye shared his experiences and the challenges he overcame to secure his spot in the starting lineup.

Reflecting on his swift rise from an uncertain signing to a key player, Maduka Okoye expressed immense pride and gratitude. “Finally, I can say I accomplished something I’ve dreamt of all my life,” said the Nigerian international. “It’s a moment that my family, especially my father, and I have worked towards. But I know this is just the first step in a bigger journey that we are striving for.”
Arriving at Udinese after a turbulent year at Watford, where he struggled with limited playing time and underwent shoulder surgery, Maduka Okoye found solace in the new opportunity Italy presented. “Coming to Udinese was actually kind of good. After a challenging year in London and at Watford, I was happy to get a fresh start,” he explained. “I’m grateful to the Pozzo family for giving me this chance, even though there were no guarantees when I arrived. I wasn’t promised anything, and it wasn’t planned for me to start so soon. But I believed in myself and worked hard every day.”
Okoye’s journey was not without its uncertainties. He started with no promises of game time, let alone becoming the first-choice goalkeeper. However, his perseverance and the unwavering belief of his father played crucial roles. “When I signed for Udinese, my father told me, ‘Don’t worry, in six months’ time, you will be playing.’ I didn’t know how he could be so sure, but he was right. In six months, I was playing.”
Now firmly established as Udinese’s number one, Okoye continues to strive for greater heights, acknowledging that his current success is just the beginning. His story is a testament to the power of resilience, hard work, and the support of family in achieving one’s dreams.
