According to reports, it was as a result of an infection diagnosed to be ‘Sore throat’ that prevented the World 100m hurdles Champion’s bid of becoming the third Nigerian high hurdler to win the 100m hurdles three times at the African Athletics Championships.

In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Amusan won both in Mauritius two years ago and in Asaba in 2018.

Tobi Amusan would have become one of just three African athletes to win three straight titles in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, together with Maria Usifo and Glory Alozie, had she participated and triumphed.

Adaobi Tabugo of Nigeria has already earned a spot in the final.

On Friday, the first day of the competition, Team Nigeria took home two gold medals.
