Captain of Gwandum Academy Hashimu Ashabulo has hailed their mental toughness and the believe they had that they could dislodge the former champion, All Stars FC in their Round of 16 tie at the ongoing 6th Adamu Yola Gombe South Unity Cup played recently at the Billiri Township Stadium.
Ashabulo in a chat with the Adamu Yola Cup Media pointed out that they approached their last 16 game of the tournament with the rightt mentality to show All Stars the exit door and that they are counting on the same scenario when they are up against Pokwangli United in a Quarter-final tie on Wednesday.
First timer, Gwandum Academy created a massive upset after they knocked out twice champion, All Stars FC 5-4 on penalties after the regulation time had ended 1-1 apiece.
Ashabulo stated: “We came here with a winning mentality after promising our coach the win. When our opponents found the back of our net, we became charged up, regrouped and then pulled one back to stay at par, because we didn’t come here to be knocked out.
“We are here to lift the trophy and were upbeat God will grant our hearts’ desires.”
Gwandum Academy Coach Peter Samaila, reserved praise for his wards for keeping to their promise and attributed their victory to playing according to instructions, determination and hard work.
Gwandum Academy will be hoping that their impressive run will progress beyond the quarter-final when they slug it out with Pokwangli United on Wednesday.
