Super Falcons’ striker, Ifeoma Onumonu, has made a significant move to Montpellier HSC’s women’s team in France’s top league, Ligue 1.
Onumonu arrives from Utah Royals of the NWSL, where she showcased her prolific scoring ability.
The 30-year-old is now the first Nigerian player to join the club, marking a historic milestone for Montpellier.
Montpellier HSC, which finished 6th in the Arkema Première Ligue last season, is eager to integrate Onumonu into its squad as they aim to improve their standing this year.
The club has a youthful attacking lineup featuring talents like Esther Mbakem Niaro, Nina Ngueleu, Lola Gstalter, and Elisa Rambaud. Onumonu’s experience and versatility are expected to be invaluable additions to the team.
Prior to her stint with Utah Royals, Onumonu had a successful career with NJ/NY Gotham FC, Reign FC, Portland Thorns FC, and Boston Breakers.
Her impressive journey includes her debut for the Nigeria Women’s National Team in June 2021. Despite an ankle injury limiting her appearances for Utah Royals, she was part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2024 Olympic Games, where she played against Brazil and world champions Spain.
Onumonu expressed her excitement about the move, stating, “I am very happy to be here today. I am impatient to discover my new club and this new living environment.
I needed a change. I have played in the USA for my entire career and club so far, and I had in the back of my mind the desire to discover European football. When this opportunity presented itself here in Montpellier, I didn’t hesitate”.
Her arrival at Montpellier is anticipated to enhance the team’s attacking options and strengthen their presence in the league.
Onumonu has been assigned the number 11 shirt for the 2024-2025 season. Her transfer to Montpellier signifies a new chapter in her career, and the club and its fans are hopeful for a successful season ahead.
