A maiden Sports Carnival being organized by the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) will hold on May 6 at the Cricket Oval of Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos where 30 schools from across the country will fight for honors.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, yesterday, President General of USOSA, Mike Magaji, stated that the sports carnival is being organized by the old students to promote excellence, love, and unity, which Unity schools in Nigeria are known for.
“We grew up not knowing differences in tribe and religion,” Magaji said. “But today, Nigeria is highly challenged due to sentimental issues, and USOSA is using sports as a vehicle to promote talent, and at the same time, rekindle our old love for one another.”
According to him, the Sports Carnival, which is tagged: ‘Diversity, Equity, Unity In Sports’, will see the old students, male and female, compete in five-a-side football, volleyball, table tennis, 100m, 400m, scrabble, ludo and tug of war.
Also speaking at the occasion, the chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Chinedu Okoli, said that the carnival is mainly to mentor the new generation of students in the 110 Unity Schools across the country on the need to show love to one another.
He revealed that trophies would be awarded to best-performing schools, and medals will be given to individuals who performed well.
Okoli also stated that OSOSA had written to various Unity schools in Lagos, including the one in Badagry, to send students to witness the carnival.
Four old students, Uyi Apata (President of Nigeria Cricket Federation), Musa Ahmadu (former Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation), Francis Orbih (President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria), and Musa Kida (President of Basketball Federation) will be honored at the carnival for their contributions to sports development in the country.
