The 2024 Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League is set to commence with a thrilling display of talent as 24 teams, comprising 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams, will compete in the first phase from August 24th to September 10th at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
This year’s league, dubbed the “Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League,” marks the inaugural edition under the sponsorship of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Chief Martin Melandi, Technical Director of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), and a member of the League Management Committee (LMC), revealed that the decision to name the league after the NCS was influenced by the commitment of the current Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi (MFR), who is a fervent supporter of volleyball.
Melandi stated, “The current Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, is a lover of sports, especially volleyball, and has attended the Premier League in Abuja as well as the Super Cup in Ilorin four years ago.”
He further explained that the postponement of the league, initially slated for an earlier date, was a result of the league’s expansion over the past seven years. Despite the challenges, this year’s league promises intense competition as the best teams in the country vie for the title. Importantly, no teams were relegated from the 2023 Premier League, while two teams gained promotion from the National Division 1 League.
The men’s teams set to compete include Offa VC (defending champions), NSCDC, Kano Pillars, Nigeria Customs Service, and others, while the women’s category will feature teams such as CNS Spikers, NSCDC, Nigeria Customs Service, and NAF Rocket VC.
As the teams prepare for the tournament, volleyball enthusiasts across the nation eagerly await what promises to be a historic and action-packed event, setting the stage for future editions of the Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League.
