Super Eagles’ captain, William Troost-Ekong is staying upbeat about the Nigerian team’s chances of qualifying for next year’s World Cup, as he says the race is still on and the squad will not give up until the final kick of the campaign, Sports247 reports.
Speaking against the backdrop of the Eagles’ largely damaging 1-1 draw at home with Zimbabwe on Tuesday, Troost-Ekong admitted that the Nigerian squad has not done well in the race to the first FIFA World Cup to be co-hosted by three countries, but quickly buttressed that they will keep fighting until the final table emerges in Group C.

“Although we have three teams ahead of us, we are still on track. That’s the most important thing. We could have done better than what we’ve done so far, but we can’t change what we did before. We can only keep playing and wait to see what happens when we get to the end of the qualification and see where every team stands,” the Al-Kholood of Saudi Arabia centre back philosophised.
Sports247 further reports that the Eagles head into the last four matches of the qualifiers lying fourth on the log, with only seven points, while Benin Republic and Rwanda are third and second respectively with eight points each, though separated by goals difference.
South Africa now lead the pack with ten points, but they face three points and three goals deduction on account of allegedly using an ineligible player in their 2-0 victory over Lesotho last week Friday.
