2025 AFCONQ: Libya Airport Authority Holds Super Eagles Hostage For Hours

Ahead of the crucial 2025 Africa Nations Cup, (2025 AFCON) qualifiers between Nigeria and Libya on Tuesday, Libyan Airport Authority are keeping the Super Eagles’ hostage, now running into ten hours, after the team landed at the Abraq Airport early morning Monday, Sports247 reports.

Frantic effort by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to get the issues resolved by contacting higher authority in Government has not yielded any results as Super Eagles remained stranded at the airport.

The NFF got a landing permission in Benghazi but while Air-Borne , the NFF received a directive to proceed to Abraq but after the diversion and landing at the Abraq Airport there was no member of the Libyan FA at the Airport to receive them , nor no official busses provided while the Airport gates were locked.

After hours of back and forth by the Nigeria leader of delegation, the NFF are now scrambling to make alternate transport arrangements for the four hour journey from Abraq Airport to Benina, an outskirts of Benghazi with the Federal Government of Nigeria being contacted to make security arrangements for the already exhausted team.

This development might not be unconnected to a report in Libya local media, which predicted an hostile treatment for the Super Eagles.

Recall, Libya’s captain, Faisal Al-Badri, accused the NFF of poor treatment during their arrival in Nigeria for the first leg match but the NFF swiftly refuted these allegations, saying that the Libyans only communicated their travel plans three hours before landing.

The Super Eagles defeated the Mediterranean knights of Libya at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo by 1-0 and needed at least a draw in the return league to eliminate the Libyans from the 2025 AFCON qualifying race while a victory for the host will keep hope their hope of qualifying for finals in Morocco in 2025.

The return leg, will be played on Tuesday, October 15 at 8 pm in Benina, Libya
