In a bid to address the dearth of grassroots sports talent discovery in Nigeria, the Presiding Bishop of TREM Church, Dr. Mike Okonkwo emphasized the need for sustained commitment from individuals and corporate organizations in organizing sporting events.
Speaking at the finals of the 19th annual Mike Okonkwo Football Championship (MOFC) held at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, Bishop Okonkwo expressed his passion for promoting football development and engaging vulnerable youths in sports careers.
In the male category of the MOFC, Team Samjason clinched victory with a 2-0 win over Team 360, while the defending champions, Young Talent 99 Academy, secured the women’s category title by defeating Phoenix 3-0.
Bishop Okonkwo called upon both individuals and organizations not to waver in their support for football and other sporting activities, citing their crucial role in addressing social issues and creating opportunities for youth development. He emphasized the significance of continuity in sports championships, stating that long-term events provide a platform for discovering and nurturing young talents.
Over the years, the MOFC has been instrumental in unearthing promising talents, some of whom have gone on to represent the national team or pursue professional careers both domestically and internationally. Bishop Okonkwo commended TREM Church’s unwavering commitment to sustaining the MOFC despite financial challenges and other obstacles.
Furthermore, Bishop Okonkwo celebrated his birthday by hosting the MOFC final matches, which, for him, symbolized an opportunity to positively impact people’s lives through the work of God.
Iyke Malachy Ndubuzor, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the MOFC, acknowledged the championship’s successful 19-year run and its role in redirecting the lives of numerous youths away from the streets. He acknowledged the challenges faced due to funding constraints in the current edition but expressed optimism about the tournament’s 20th edition, expecting increased participation.
The MOFC concluded with the presentation of cash prizes, trophies, and awards to outstanding players and officials. Nwafor Chima emerged as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the male category, highlighting the championship’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding excellence.
