No fewer than 100 golfers are expected to participate in the two-day tournament at the Tiger Golf Club (TGC) in Ibadan to celebrate newly-elected Captain Joachim Akee and Lady Captain Folashade Ajala.
Chairman of the tournament’s Local Organising Committee, Muyiwa Laniyan, said about 150 golfers have however so far shown interest in participating in the two-day event.
“The logistics have been put in place to make the tournament a memorable one,’’ he said.
Laniyan, who is a former captain of the club, assured that all participants would maintain social distancing and observe all the necessary rules of washing hands and using hand-sanitizers.
“Because of the pandemic, we have scaled down the number of players to participate. Otherwise, our initial plan was for 200 golfers, but because of the current pandemic right now, we have scaled it down to 120 players. So, we are planning for 90 men and 30 female players.
“I can assure you that the course has been re-designed and re-engineered, while we are expanding our greens and we are doing the distance markers. Also, our prizes will be outstanding.’’
He added that the event will re-emphasise the fact that the Tiger Golf Club was used to being in the forefront.
“We have been pioneering so many things, and this is the first time in a long time in the South West region that the Captain and Lady Captain will be having their inaugural together. That is a plus for TGC.
“Every time what we emphasise it that golf is life. Even in this current pandemic, they tell you to get Vitamin D and you get it from the sun. You walk, and you exercise.
“When you are playing golf, it is the totality of your body, including your mental faculty. It will build up your muscle, integrity and your person and you meet up with people of good character and impeccable integrity.
“During the pandemic, people were encouraged to go out and take in the sun, you play golf inside the sun and I have been to three tournaments now and we had very good turnout,’’ Laniyan said.
\The tournament is scheduled for Sept. 25 and Sept. 26 at the club’s premises at Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Odogbo in Ibadan.
