The Honourable Commissioner for Sports Development in Bayelsa State, Daniel Igali, has highlighted the Olympics as a festival that promotes a peaceful and better world for all.
The Olympic champion made these remarks at the 2024 Olympic Day Run in Yenagoa, organized by the Bayelsa State Government in conjunction with the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Bayelsa State Ministry of Sports Development, and Bayelsa State Sports Council on Saturday, June 29th.
Igali emphasized that the Olympics is not just a platform for nations to showcase their athletic skills but also a means to foster brotherhood and friendships among diverse groups.
“I want to warmly welcome all of you to the Olympic Day Run. Today, we celebrate the values of Olympism, which include excellence, friendliness, brotherhood, and solidarity,” Igali stated.
He encouraged everyone to embody the spirit of Olympism by living healthy lifestyles and collaborating with like-minded individuals.
Patrick Ibeh, representing the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, conveyed the NOC president’s goodwill message and underscored the significance of the Olympic Day Run.
“On Olympic Day, we celebrate the creation of the Olympic movement by Pierre de Coubertin.
This year’s celebration is unique, especially with the Olympics starting in a few weeks. It’s a time for us to come together, celebrating our global community,” Ibeh said.
Sir Braveman Wodi, the Director of Sports for the Bayelsa State Sports Council, also celebrated the Olympic Day movement, describing it as a celebration of diversity.
“Olympic Day allows people of all ages and abilities to experience the magic of the Olympic Games in their own communities.
It highlights the benefits of physical activity and the Olympic virtues of excellence, friendships, and respect,” Wodi added.
The 2024 Olympic Day Run in Yenagoa saw participation from high-profile personalities, including Honourable Tare Porri, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, and Mrs. Grace Alagoa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports.
